5-Day Course Outline
Day 1 – Governance & Accountability in NGOs
- Differentiate roles of boards, management and donors.
- Discuss legal, ethical and accountability expectations.
- Review common governance challenges in NGOs and non-profits.
- Reflect on power dynamics between stakeholders and communities.
- Assess governance strengths and gaps in participants’ organizations.
Day 2 – Strategy, Programs & Theory of Change
- Clarify or refine mission, vision and values.
- Develop or review a simple theory of change.
- Translate strategy into priority programs and projects.
- Integrate cross-cutting issues (gender, inclusion, environment).
- Draft or refine a simple strategic framework for a real NGO.
Day 3 – MEL, Results-Based Management & Learning
- Review key concepts in results-based management and MEL.
- Develop indicators and simple MEL plans for projects.
- Discuss data collection, quality and use for learning.
- Explore participatory and adaptive approaches to MEL.
- Apply MEL thinking to a live or recent project.
Day 4 – Fundraising, Donor Relations & Partnerships
- Map main donors, partners and funding opportunities.
- Review basics of proposal development and donor compliance.
- Discuss building and maintaining trust with donors and partners.
- Explore collaboration models and coalitions for impact.
- Plan concrete steps to strengthen funding and partnerships.
Day 5 – Risk, Safeguarding & Organizational Sustainability
- Identify key risks: financial, reputational, security and safeguarding.
- Discuss approaches to safeguarding and ethical practice.
- Plan improvements in transparency and reporting.
- Consider long-term sustainability of people, systems and funding.
- Develop an action plan focused on two to three priority areas.
